Reflection

Please take a few moments and blog a reflection about the course you've just completed. Have your opinions about literature improved? Changed? How so? How do you feel about Gothic? Did anything surprise you? Did you enjoy the reading? If I should teach this class again, which readings should I omit or add? What was your favorite?

I really enjoyed being your instructor this semester, and I hope you've enjoyed the class as well. Have a great summer!

I already wrote a reflection on the class but I was watching television yesterday and saw a movie that fit perfectly into the class. I was watching the movie channel when "Flowers in the Attic" came on. The person I was watching with said it was good and I hadn't even heard of it before so we started to watch it. As I watched i thought this would be perfect for Gothic Literature. At the end of the movie i realized that it was based off of a novel. I didn't look to see the genre it came from but it was a spitting image of Southern Gothic. There was the plantation house and the abandonment of the parents, with a slight twist. There was the idea of the religious influences and the grotesgue. I don't want to ruin the movie/novel for you but I really think you should use this book or movie if you were to ever teach this class again, or for just shear enjoyment. It was a very intriguing movie, I think I will probably read the book as well to see the differences. I sincerely enjoyed the class.

  2. Spenser: Thanks. That book is by V. C. Andrews and I read it years ago. I guess I should go back and re-read it. Perhaps it will make an excellent additiont to 20th century gothic. And it has an Attic--with children. Remember how we spoke about nurseries freuently being in the attic? Children in the Attic?
Thanks for the good post. LD
